Spanking: The great debate

spanking August 4, 1998
Web posted at: 2:10 p.m. EDT (1810 GMT)

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- To spank or not to spank? For many parents, that question can be tough to answer.

New research at the University of New Hampshire may change some parents' minds. It indicates children who are never or rarely spanked have higher scores on tests of cognitive ability than those who are frequently spanked.

Why the difference? Researchers say one of the reasons might be that parents who don't spank spend more time reasoning with their children. Correspondent Greg LaMotte has the story.
