Harrelson's father seeks to overturn murder convictionAugust 1, 1998Web posted at: 2:54 p.m. EDT (1454 GMT) DENVER (Reuters) - Convicted murderer Charles Harrelson, the father of actor Woody Harrelson, will try at a hearing Monday to overturn his conviction for killing a federal judge nearly 20 years ago in a murder-for-hire case. Harrelson, 60, has been brought from the nation's highest security federal prison for a three-day hearing in federal court in Denver on his contention that he did not receive a fair trial. He is serving a life sentence for the crime. Harrelson's attorney David Michael told Reuters that members of his family would attend but he would not say if that included Woody Harrelson. Michael denied rumors that the son and father are estranged, saying, "Nothing could be further from the truth -- the Harrelson family is very close." The elder Harrelson was already divorced from Woody Harrelson's mother at the time of the killing and had remarried. Copyright 1998 Reuters Limited. All rights reserved. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
