Bulldozers demolish former home of O.J. Simpson

OJ's house
Construction crews demolish Simpson's Brentwood estate

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Bulldozers on Wednesday began demolishing the Brentwood mansion formerly owned by O.J. Simpson at the direction of its new owner.

Jagged shingles hung from the roof as a bulldozer knocked in walls, causing the roof of the 6,000-square-foot house to collapse bit by bit.

As the walls fell, dust rose and at times obscured the mansion's rooms, much to the approval of neighbors who said they were tired of the notoriety the mansion brought to their Brentwood neighborhood.

Simpson bought the house in 1979 for $650,000. The estate gained notoriety after the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in 1994. Simpson, who was charged and acquitted of the crimes, was taken into custody at the mansion.

The house was auctioned off in July 1997 and purchased by Hawthorne Savings for about $2.6 million. The bank foreclosed on Simpson when he couldn't afford to pay the $24,000 monthly mortgage. The bank later sold the property for about $3.95 million.
