Rudolph search focuses on small islands in N. Carolina lake
Web posted at: 10:43 p.m. EDT (2243 GMT) ANDREWS, North Carolina (CNN) -- The dragnet for bombing suspect Eric Robert Rudolph took to the water Friday, as federal agents used boats to search several uninhabited islands in North Carolina's Nantahala Lake. Agents searching the state's remote southwest corner for Rudolph also brought portable lights and several small generators into the area. New search dogs were taken to a command center in Andrews where the search is being coordinated. Rudolph, 31, is a suspect in the January 29 bombing of a women's clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, where abortions are performed. A security guard was killed and a nurse severely injured in the blast. In addition, Rudolph is wanted for questioning in three earlier bomb attacks in Atlanta -- at Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Olympic games; at a suburban women's clinic where abortions are performed, in January 1997; and at a nightclub with a mostly lesbian clientele, in February 1997. One woman was killed and more than 110 people were injured in the park bombing.
The search for Rudolph intensified after he contacted a former neighbor, who lives along Nantahala Lake, on July 7. More than 200 searchers are working around the clock, combing a 30-square-mile area in and around Andrews. On Friday, a spokesman for Rudolph's family announced that they would hold a news conference Saturday morning. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
