Text of letter to the world from relatives of victims of the TWA Flight 800 explosion:
July 18, 1998
Web posted at: 11:42 a.m. EDT (1542 GMT)
"It's been two years since the fateful crash of TWA Flight 800, since the fire, the blackness and the denial. Yet the memory of that night continues still to burn in our minds and hearts.
"Like the waves here on the beach that endlessly roll to embrace the shore, our love for those we lost that night is timeless and will stay with us always. In the same way we will always remember with love and gratitude those whose lives became entwined with ours. All of us were strangers. Families with parents, spouses and children torn from them. And friends whose heroic deeds in those desperate hours forged, in a thousand hearts, bonds a lifetime long.
"The crash of this flight is still being investigated and its true cause may never really be determined. The retrieval and reconstruction of the wreckage will be marked in history as a miracle of modern technology. But we as family members believe the real legacy that will endure is the way people were able to rise above the shocking trauma of this tragedy and sweep aside all their human differences to profoundly help one another. It is this extraordinary outpouring of love and kindness that will remain in our hearts and memories forever. We the families of TWA Flight 800 thank all of you who have joined us in coming here today. We thank you for praying with us and remembering the long dark night of July 17, 1996, that took away our loved ones and changed forever so many lives."
