Seaplane accident reported in East RiverJuly 13, 1998Web posted at: 12:46 a.m. EDT (0446 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) -- A seaplane flipped over and crashed while trying to land on the East River along midtown Manhattan Sunday evening, police and emergency officials confirmed. Three people were injured, one critically. Emergency divers were dispatched to the accident scene, near East 34th Street, where the plane was reported overturned at 7:52 p.m. Divers pulled the pilot and two passengers from the water. Pilot Thoams Roed, 53, from Long Island, is in critical condition in Bellevue with chest pains. Passengers Elizabeth Barr, 24, from Boca Raton, Florida, and Neil Hirsch, 51, from Water Mill, New York, were treated at Bellevue Hospital and to be released, said police spokeswoman Leslie Cardona. The FAA is investigating the cause of the accident. The plane originated in Fire Island and stopped in Westchester en route to Manhattan. The plane's nose dipped into water during the landing, causing the aircraft to flip over, Cardona said. No bystanders or boaters in the vicinity were reported injured.
