COOK INLET, Alaska (CNN) -- A native American who is a National Park Ranger is attempting a 300-mile kayak journey in the treacherous waters off the coast of Alaska.

Glenn Hart, a 36-year-old former U.S. Army Ranger, is trying to reach out to native Alaskan children caught between old and new cultures, especially those who have fallen victim to alcohol, drug and physical abuse.

CNN videographer Tim Wall spent four days with Hart for his continuing series, "American Voices," and prepared this report.
