WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Hunched in motorless, pod-shaped cars
with names like "Assassin," and "Blonde Bombshell Three," 40
children competed in the 57th Annual Greater Washington Soap
Box Derby Saturday under the shadow of the U.S. Capitol.
The day-long event pitted the driving abilities of children
ages 9 to 16. The derby is a qualifying event for the All-
American World Championship, to be held August 8 in Akron,
Ohio.
The children competed in three divisions: master's,
superstock and stock. To drive in the master's, contestants
must operate a homemade car built from scratch. The other
divisions allow cars made from kits.
