Recovery of Hawaiian tour helicopter victims slows
June 27, 1998Web posted at: 3:45 p.m. EDT (1945 GMT) LIHUE, Hawaii (CNN) -- Clouds and gusting winds are hampering efforts to recover at least two more bodies from a remote Hawaiian mountainside, where a tour helicopter crashed late Thursday. Searchers on Friday were able to airlift out the bodies of the helicopter pilot and two children after an Army paramedic was lowered to the crash site -- 2,300 feet up Mount Waialeale and inaccessible by foot. The paramedic found five bodies at the crash site. A sixth victim, believed dead, has not been reported found. It appears the Ohana Helicopters' craft flew straight into the mountain when it crashed Thursday morning while on a 50-minute tour of the Garden Isle, Federal Aviation Administration inspector Joel Koff said. Weather was believed to be a factor in the crash, with rain and heavy clouds in the area. It was the first fatal helicopter crash in Hawaii this year. Last year, three crashes killed four people. Ohana had a perfect safety record before the crash.
