Portion of Coney Island boardwalk collapses

NEW YORK (CNN)-- A portion of the historic boardwalk at Coney Island collapsed Monday, and one woman is reported to have sustained minor injuries.

New York City police and fire departments were investigating the cause of the collapse and trying to determine whether there were more injuries. A homeless population lives in the area under the boardwalk.

Traditionally on Memorial Day, the boardwalk, which runs along the beach, is packed with holiday revelers. But thunderstorms that swept through New York City earlier Monday kept many people off the boardwalk.
