NEW YORK (CNN) - Feminist leaders and city and state politicians gathered Thursday at the Riverside Memorial Chapel to mourn Bella Abzug, the former congresswoman who died Tuesday from complications following heart surgery.
Mourners included Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Marlo Thomas, Phil Donahue and Shirley MacLaine. Past and present elected officials included former New York Mayor Ed Koch, mayoral candidate Ruth Messinger and Peter Vallone, New York city council speaker and gubernatorial candidate.
Many of the mourners wore purple ribbons and armbands because purple was Abzug's favorite color, as well as the color of the suffragettes
Abzug represented the West Side of Manhattan for three terms in the 1970s. She was also a leader in the feminist and anti-Vietnam War movements.
