BUFFALO, Montana (CNN) -- Two students were killed and at least three others injured Tuesday morning when a freight train slammed into their school bus at a crossing in Buffalo, the Fergus County coroner said.
The southbound freight train, with 50 cars and six locomotives, struck the bus shortly after 7:30 a.m. at a crossing in Buffalo, said Gus Melonas, a spokesman for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad Co.
"The train blew its whistle, went into emergency stop, made contact with the bus, and we're further investigating at this point," Melonas said.
Coroner Jerry Cloyd said that only five students and the driver were on board when the accident happened.
The dead students' names and ages have not been released, but Cloyd said one was in junior high and the other in high school.
The three other students and the driver were taken to hospitals. Their conditions were unknown.
No one on board the train was hurt.
Buffalo is a small community about 100 miles southeast of Great Falls in central Montana.
