WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Internal Revenue Service began offering extended walk-in service Saturday at more than 150 locations.
Taxpayers now will be able to pick up forms and publications, have tax law questions answered, receive taxpayer identification numbers and make tax payments every Saturday through and including April 11, four days before the April 15 tax deadline.
In addition, on the last three Saturdays -- March 28, April 4 and April 11 -- the IRS will help prepare tax returns for people with low incomes, the elderly and those who are eligible for an earned income tax credit.
"Many people will find it more convenient to visit the IRS on a Saturday to get the help they need, rather than trying to fit it into their busy weekday schedules," IRS Commissioner Charles Rossotti said in a news release.
Taxpayers can call the IRS helpline -- 1-800-829-1040 -- to find the nearest Saturday walk-in location.
The expanded Saturday service was recommended by Vice President Al Gore's National Performance Review Task Force.
