Hondas, Toyotas top most-stolen-car list

March 3, 1998
Web posted at: 7:33 a.m. EST (1233 GMT)

DETROIT (CNN) -- American-made cars are becoming less of a target for thieves, while car thefts on imports such as Hondas and Toyotas are on the rise.

The 1989 Toyota Camry led the list of 1997's most stolen cars in the nation. Toyota had seven cars on the top 25 list -- six Camrys and a Corolla. Meanwhile, more than half of the 25 most pilfered vehicles were made by Honda Motor Co., chiefly the Honda Accord.

Only five U.S.-made vehicles appeared on the list, published by CCC Information Services Inc., which tracks auto thefts for the insurance industry.

"This year's study reflects the growing popularity of foreign cars not only among consumers but also among car thieves," said Jack Rozint, senior vice president of Chicago-based CCC.

Some industry analysts are questioning the validity of this year's results because no sport utility vehicles and only one truck made it on the list.
