ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey (Reuters) -- Three pit bull terriers attacked a group of children during recess at a grade school Tuesday, sending 15 of them to the hospital, along with a teacher and another adult, police said.
None of the injuries was serious. The 6- and 7-year-olds from the Uptown Complex school were treated for bites and scratches at the Atlantic City Medical Center.
The children, all first- and second-graders, were among an
estimated 200 children outside for recess in the school's
playground at about 11:20 a.m. when the dogs suddenly appeared, police said.
Teacher Beverly Goodman and her sister Marilyn, a city worker who was visiting the school, tried to protect the shrieking children by pulling them away from the animals. Both women were attacked.
Hospital officials said Marilyn Goodman suffered the worst injuries. She was bitten on the leg, arm and chest. Her sister was bitten on the leg.
Two of the dogs were found on a street an hour later. The third was still missing late in the day. A 19-year-old boy was identified as the owner of the dogs. After the attack, police discovered him in an abandoned building and charged him with violations of the city's dog ordinances.
