WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Five people were shot and wounded in the lobby of the Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department. One of the victims has been pronounced dead, police said.
Witnesses say a man was sitting in the lobby, and when five people entered, he shot them with a handgun, according to Sgt. Joe Gentile, the spokesman. The suspect had apparently inquired about a patient who had just been admitted to the hospital, Gentile said.
Four victims were taken to the hospital's trauma center, Gentile said. The fifth victim was taken somewhere else, he said.
One of the victims is believed to be a hospital employee, another a volunteer, and two others patients, Gentile said. Police say three are females and two are males. It's unclear at this time which victim has been pronounced dead.
No information was available on their conditions.
The suspect was seen getting into a light blue car, possibly a Chevrolet Lumina, Gentile said.
