AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) -- What is believed to be the oldest cat in the United States is approaching his 33rd birthday and still purring.

"Grandpa Rex's Allen" turns 33 years old this week. He will celebrate as he did last year with a special birthday cake topped with tuna and asparagus.

Veterinarians credit the feline's longevity to good genes and a loving family. A daily breakfast of bacon, eggs, coffee and broccoli hasn't hurt, either.

If he lives 13 more months, he will be the world's oldest cat on record.
