BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (CNN) -- An explosion killed one person and injured at least one other at a women's clinic early Thursday, officials said.

Officials revised earlier reports indicating two people had been injured in the blast.

Authorities evacuated a one-block area surrounding the New Woman, All Women Health Care Clinic, located on the south side of Birmingham, Birmingham Fire Chief L.D. Miskelley told CNN.

Earlier reports indicated two people, including a police officer, had been transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries. The other injured victim was said to be a nurse at the clinic. A hospital spokeswoman told CNN the nurse was undergoing surgery. It is unclear at this time if either the nurse or the police officer did not survive.

Miskelley said bomb dogs were en route to the scene.

"We're waiting for the bomb dogs to sweep the area before we go in," he told CNN.

Officials could not say whether the clinic, or others in the area, had received threats.

The clinic offers family planning and abortion services.
