ATLANTA (CNN) -- In a ceremony featuring Indian prayers and American jazz, Andrew Young unveiled a statue of Mohandas Gandhi at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic site in Atlanta on Saturday.
The six-foot, four-inch bronze statue is the first Gandhi statue to stand on federal land.
Gandhi is considered the father of modern India. He led a campaign of non-violent protests against British rule, which eventually led to India's independence in 1947.
Martin Luther King Jr. later adopted Gandhi's methods of peaceful protest in the civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s.
