MIAMI BEACH, Florida (Reuters) -- The city of Miami Beach will destroy the houseboat where suspected spree killer Andrew Cunanan committed suicide in July.
The city said Friday it had awarded a $13,550 contract to a demolition company to remove and destroy the light blue houseboat, following a court battle with its owner, German businessman Matthias Ruehl.
"The housebarge has been determined by many sources and authorities to be a serious danger to navigation, an environmental threat and a general threat to public safety," the city said in a statement.
Cunanan, who is believed to have killed fashion designer Gianni Versace and four others, shot himself in the head on the upper floor of the houseboat, where he holed up to avoid police after Versace was gunned down on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion.
The houseboat sank to the bottom of the city's Indian Creek waterway in December.
