PALM SPRINGS, California (CNN) -- Sonny Bono's widow is spending this weekend with family and friends considering a run for her late husband's congressional seat, according to Republican National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson.
A special election has been set for April 7 to fill California's vacant 44th congressional seat.
Nicholson said Mary Bono would make a good member of Congress because of her love for her country and the conservative values she shared with her husband. Sonny Bono, a Republican and former pop star, was killed in a skiing accident earlier this month.
He said other potential Republican candidates are waiting for Mrs. Bono's decision before making their own plans known.
