SPARKS, Nevada (CNN) -- Several people were injured and up to three others missing after an explosion rocked a chemical plant near Sparks, police said.

Sgt. Bob Towery of the Washoe County Sheriff's Department said witnesses had heard two consecutive explosions at the Sierra Chemical Co. plant, which is about 10 miles east of Reno.

Some 12 people were believed to have been inside the plant at the time of the blasts, which occurred at about 8 a.m., according to the police spokesman.

The plant manufactures a variety of explosives for the mining and weapons industry.

A secondary fire was being allowed to burn itself out amid fears that there may be more explosives at the plant and that there may be toxic vapors in the air.

Because the plant is located in a rural, canyon area, no evacuations have been necessary.

The Washoe County Medical Center in Reno was preparing for the arrival of an unknown number of injured, according to a spokeswoman.

Earlier reports said three people had been killed, but police later said no deaths could be confirmed.
