PADUCAH, Kentucky (CNN) -- The Heath High School freshman charged with opening fire on a group of students, killing three and wounding five, will appear in juvenile court Wednesday for a closed-door hearing in which a judge is expected to bind him over to adult court.
Michael Carneal, 14, was arrested soon after the December 1 shooting spree and charged with murder, attempted murder and burglary. Three female students died that day from their wounds.
Kentucky law mandates that juveniles who are age 14 and older accused of using a firearm in the commission of a felony must be tried as adults, giving the judge little discretion in Wednesday's hearing.
A McCracken County grand jury scheduled to meet Friday would consider indictments against Carneal if the case is, as expected, transferred to the circuit court.
