NEW YORK (CNN) -- A federal grand jury is expected to indict four New York City police officers on charges stemming from an attack on a Haitian immigrant, CNN has learned.
A law enforcement source tells CNN that the grand jury is hearing final witnesses in the case, including testimony from accuser Abner Louima. The indictments are expected to follow.
The four officers -- Justin Volpe, Charles Schwarz, Thomas Weise and Thomas Bruder -- already face state charges, accused of beating and sodomizing Louima in the bathroom of a Brooklyn police precinct on August 9.
A parallel investigation was launched by federal authorities who, under the civil rights code, can conduct a more sweeping investigation and charge violations with harsher penalties -- including life in prison.
