DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) -- All seven of the world's only septuplets were breathing on their own Friday as the last of the babies, Nathan McCaughey, was removed from a mechanical breathing device, hospital officials said.
The smallest of the four boys at birth at 2 pounds, 14 ounces, Nathaniel was upgraded to fair condition from serious.
That positive step was made previously by his three brothers and three sisters as they were taken off ventilators at the neonatal intensive care unit at Blank Children's Hospital.
The septuplets, born to the McCaughey family November 19, were all receiving their food by tubes leading through their noses, spokeswoman Lynne Yontz said.
Doctors have said the septuplets, who were born more than nine weeks premature, may not leave the hospital until sometime in January.
The parents, Bobbi, 29, and Kenny, 27, spent much of Thanksgiving Day at the hospital as they have been doing every day, and have been able to hold the babies, a family spokesman said.
