SEARSPORT, Maine (CNN) - A woman who recovered from Hodgkin's lymphoma began a 6,000-mile cross-continental journey Saturday hoping to inspire people fighting cancer.
Wendy Smith hopes to arrive at the Bering Sea near Nome, Alaska, in mid-April, raising money along the way for cancer programs in North America and her native Britain. She was diagnosed with cancer at age 26 while in the
British Army.
She and her support team plan to go from Searsport to Quebec, then west across Canada to Alaska. Although the Hereford, England, resident has received extensive help -- including donated dogs and equipment -- from sled dog racers in Alaska and Maine, she has had trouble lining up support from big-name sponsors.
