MONTELLO, Wisconsin (CNN) -- Four men would each face up to
25 years in prison if convicted of hate crimes for allegedly
burning a man's horse-drawn buggy because he is Amish.
Brent Paul, 19, Thomas Jerome, 24, Robert D. Hoel Jr., 20,
and Daniel M. Krueger, 22, were charged with theft and
criminal damage to property, both felonies, in connection
with the case.
Two of them admitted to a sheriff's deputy that they took the
buggy from the man's farm and set it on fire November 2,
according to a criminal complaint. "We didn't need the wood,
we just wanted to mess with them," the complaint quoted Paul
as saying.
The hate crime reference adds up to five years in prison to
the felony charges and up to one year for most misdemeanors.
