LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- A 15-mile stretch of a California
coastal highway remained closed Wednesday as authorities
investigated a traffic accident that killed 11 people.
A van carrying a dozen people and a pickup collided and burst
into flames on scenic Highway 1 Tuesday night, forcing
officials to close the section of the winding two-lane
highway. It was not immediately clear when the road would
reopen.
Six bodies were found inside the charred wreckage of the van,
and two others were found on the road. Three bodies were
recovered from the truck, including that of a child.
Two survivors were in critical condition at Goleta Valley
Hospital and the other two were in stable condition at Lompoc
District Hospital, officials said. The accident occurred
near Lompoc, about 250 miles south of San Francisco.
