SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) -- California's secretary of state and
the San Francisco city attorney's office are trying to
determine whether votes were cast by "dead people" in last
June's San Francisco 49ers stadium election, the San
Francisco Chronicle reported.
Voters were asked to decide whether the city should finance a
new stadium for the National Football League team. The $535
million project passed by fewer than 1,500 votes.
The city attorney's office began investigating the matter,
after finding evidence of signature fraud in at least one
voting precinct, the paper said. City officials have denied
there is any evidence of widespread fraud.
The Chronicle examined records for 65,000 county deaths over
the past decade. The result: 744 names matched those voting
in the election. Only 43 of those had matching zip codes.
