LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Rodney King is serving a 90-day misdemeanor sentence for an incident involving his ex-wife, authorities said.
King began serving his time August 4 at the Los Angeles
County Men's Central Jail and is being held in an area separate from the rest of the inmates.
King was convicted in 1996 on a misdemeanor domestic violence
charge involving a hit-and-run accident. Prosecutors claim King tried to force his estranged wife from their car during an argument and that she injured her arm and head when she resisted.
In April 1991, King, who is black, was beaten by police who
stopped his car. A videotape of the beating enraged people in
Los Angeles, and three days of riots broke out when four
white policemen were acquitted of criminal charges a year later.
Two of the four officers were later convicted in federal
court of violating King's civil rights. The city paid King
$3.8 million, much of which went to his lawyers.
King has had other run-ins with the law. He was arrested for
soliciting a transvestite prostitute and for drunken driving.
