Texas town hosts primate picnic
August 11, 1997Web posted at: 10:26 p.m. EDT (0226 GMT) From CNN Affiliate KBMT WINNIE, Texas -- This southeastern Texas town was graced by the presence of about two dozen chimps and monkeys and their owners Monday, for the first annual primate picnic.
Primates at the picnic were gussied up in their best duds. While some showed off special talents -- including a panhandling routine from one picnic attendant -- most were more interested in the food, even if they had to share their dinner and their drinks. Most of the primates are more than just household pets -- they're a part of the family. Just like all children, each has a unique personality. One Texas owner described his primate as "happy-go-lucky"; another Texan said his was "a little domineering, like a middle child." "It's like having a permanent 2-year-old," said primate owner Roger Morgan. "We just don't have to worry about the college, prom and the car and the car insurance."
