Retirees return home after wildfire forces evacuation
July 20, 1997Web posted at: 3:36 p.m. EDT (1936 GMT) BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (CNN) -- Nearly 2,000 residents of two retirement communities returned to their homes Sunday after a wildfire forced them to evacuate a day earlier. No injuries to residents were reported, but one firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The central New Jersey fire charred about 800 acres Saturday on the edge of the state's vast Pine Barrens. A portion of the fire was still burning Sunday morning. Reuters contributed to this report.
