Betty Shabazz in extremely critical condition
June 19, 1997
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Betty Shabazz, the widow of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X, was in extremely critical condition Thursday, according to officials at Jacobi Medical Center.
A statement issued by the hospital Thursday said her condition had not changed since Wednesday, when doctors reported she had taken a turn for the worse. They said she had developed "serious medical problems that are typical of a severe burn injury of this magnitude."
Shabazz suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of her body in a fire at her Yonkers apartment on June 1, and has undergone five skin-replacement operations.
Shabazz's 12-year old grandson is accused of starting the blaze. He is in juvenile custody.
