SEATTLE (CNN) -- It was one shy of a world record, but still amounted to quite a litter.
Patra, a bull mastiff in Seattle, gave birth to 17 puppies. The delivery entailed 16 hours of labor Thursday and Friday, but the result was worth it.
All of the pups -- eight males and nine females -- survived. It was her first litter. The father is a Cane Corso, an unusual breed.
Meanwhile, owner Elihu Vance is stocking up on dog chow. A bull mastiff grows to be about 200 pounds, but Vance intends to sell the puppies long before that happens.
