Suspects arrested in Levin murderJune 7, 1997Web posted at: 2:55 p.m. EDT (1855 GMT)
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Police have arrested 19-year-old Corey Arthur and charged him with the robbery and slaying of Jonathan Levin, the son of Time Warner Chairman Gerald Levin. Another man, who was unidentified, was also in custody and charged with felony murder. Levin, 31, was found Monday in his Upper West Side apartment bound, stabbed and shot. Cash and an ATM card were missing from his wallet, and $800 was withdrawn from his bank account on Friday. Police sources told CNN that Arthur's fingerprint was found on some of the duct tape used to bind Levin.
Police said they believe Arthur tortured Levin at knife-point to obtain his ATM code, turning up the stereo and a vacuum cleaner to keep neighbors from hearing the screams. Police sources told CNN that Arthur's voice was identified on Levin's answering machine, telling the teacher "I need to see you. It's important." There were no signs of forced entry into Levin's apartment, leading police to believe he knew his assailant. Arthur, a former student at William Taft High School -- where Levin taught English -- has a history of arrests, including drug-related arrests in 1994 and 1996. Related stories:
