At least 4 dead after fireworks warehouse explodes
June 5, 1997 LAFOLLETTE, Tennessee (CNN) -- An explosion at a fireworks warehouse killed at least four people Thursday in a blast heard 13 miles away, according to authorities. Four people were injured and some neighborhood buildings, including the Midway Baptist Church, were damaged. Flames were quickly doused by pouring rain. Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were at the scene. The warehouse was operated by Pyro Shows Inc., a major supplier of July 4 festivals nationwide, including the display on the Mall in Washington, D.C. It is believed that eight workers were in the warehouse at the time of the blast, assembling explosives for a weekend fireworks show in Norolk, Virginia. Other employees had left for lunch a few minutes earlier, authorities said. Related story:
