Leaping Lizard!
Iguana rocks in Memphis music storeMay 28, 1997Web posted at: 11:01 p.m. EDT (0301 GMT) MEMPHIS (CNN) -- The folks who run Consignment Music in Memphis are pretty creative when it comes to dealmaking. They'll take all sorts of instruments on trade-in. If you're still a few dollar short, well, they may even settle for a lizard. That's what they did last year when a musician came in and offered an Iguana for a distortion box. As far as owner Joe Nathan is concerned, the trade worked out just fine. "We've got plenty of distortion boxes, but it's hard to find a likable lizard," Nathan says. "Wallet," South American green iguana, became the store's rock 'n' roll reptile, a mascot of sorts.
The lizard fits right in at the music store. He dances, or at least launches into a convulsion-like shake, at the sound of an electric guitar. And speaking of, the owner even had the likeness of a lizard airbrushed on a vintage guitar. "Wallet" even does tricks, such as balancing an egg atop his head. He spends most of his time atop the cash register. "He likes to make sure all of the money is there at the end of the day," Nathan says.
