ENCINITAS, California (CNN) -- A former Heaven's Gate cult member hospitalized after a suicide attempt Tuesday was upgraded from serious to fair condition Friday.
A spokeswoman at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas said Chuck Humphrey is off the respirator and has been talking and eating.
Humphrey, 54, was found unconscious in an Encinitas hotel room. Another former member of the group, Wayne Cooke, was found dead in what police believe was a suicide.
Both men had packed a bag and left "exit statements" indicating they wanted to join the 39 Heaven's Gate members who committed mass suicide at a mansion in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe in March.
