Texas law officers kill one separatist in shootout
May 5, 1997 FORT DAVIS, Texas (CNN) -- Texas law officers cornered two members of the Republic of Texas and shot and killed one of the men, authorities said late Monday afternoon. Earlier the separatists shot two police dogs used in the manhunt. "One man is shot and is not moving," said Mike Cox, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. "We know where they are, we know where the shots are coming from. We are moving more Rangers into that area." The men are identified as Richard Keyes III, 21, and Mike Matson, 48. Both fled from the so-called Republic of Texas "embassy" on Saturday as the group's leader Richard McLaren surrendered to police.
The two walked away at separate times, and both were armed. In Dallas, meanwhile, federal prosecutors announced details of an indictment against McLaren, the jailed "ambassador" of the separatist group, and his wife Evelyn. The grand jury indictment issued last week and made public on Monday accuses the McLarens of conspiracy, bank fraud, mail fraud and other charges for issuing more than $1.8 billion in bogus Republic of Texas documents. If convicted of the federal charges, Richard McLaren faces a maximum of 725 years in prison and fines totaling $24.2 million. Mrs. McLaren faces up to 155 years in prison and fines totaling $5.25 million. Related stories and sites
