Pentagon arrests protesters
April 28, 1997Web posted at: 11:55 p.m. EDT (0355 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) -- About 20 people were arrested Monday morning at the Pentagon for "destruction of government property" while protesting a U.S. Military school that trains Central and South American military leaders. The School of the Americas, run by the Army at Fort Benning, Georgia, has for a number of years drawn fire from human rights groups that claim the school teaches unethical tactics and methods, including torture. The Army has long denied that. About a hundred protesters reportedly staged "a mock burial" near the Pentagon entrance used by the Defense Secretary and senior military leaders. The demonstration involved digging a hole and planting crosses in the ground near the entrance. Those arrested were taken to the Arlington County courthouse for processing.
