Hair dryers recalled because of electrocution risks
April 22, 1997Web posted at: 12:42 p.m. EDT (1642 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A company has recalled about 8,000 hand- held hair dryers because they pose a risk of electrocution if dropped in water while plugged in, even if they have been turned off. Division Sales Inc., of Itasca, Illinois, announced the recall Monday in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The dryers lack a special plug that protects against electrical dangers, the commission said. The device has been the voluntary industry standard since January 1, 1991. The commission says consumers should stop using the recalled dryers immediately and return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
The hair dryer is made of white plastic and has the words "Professional Styler ... Asbestos Free ... HD-20 ... Made in China" printed on it. The dryer comes packaged in a triangle-shaped cardboard box labeled "Professional Hair Dryer HD-20," with a picture of it on front. Stores sold the dryer nationwide from December 1994 through February of this year for about $11. Division Sales Inc. has issued several recalls in the past, mostly for toys intended for small children. Products recalled included a total of 50,000 wooden trucks and 6,000 toy wooden caterpillars, both because they presented a choking hazard. More than 20,000 Baby Buzz stretch mobiles were recalled in January 1997 because their labels did not warn of the risk of strangulation if hung over cribs and playpens.
