Dachshunds put on the dog in New York City
April 12, 1997 NEW YORK (CNN) -- On a rainy Saturday in New York, dozens of dachshund owners took their hyperactive little friends to Washington Square Park and showed them off as proudly as if it were the Westminster Dog Show. There were awards and a parade but, mostly, it was enough just to be there. Among those putting in an appearance was a dachshund in a tailored yellow raincoat and two dachshunds tucked in their owners' coats as if they were expensive muffs.
There was a chunky, black and tan wire-haired dachshund who testily shuffled his feet as if he were not happy about getting them wet, and there was a black, smooth-haired dachshund who looked just plain bewildered. Easily the best-dressed -- and smartest -- was the wire-haired dachshund who was warm, dry and comfortable as he peered from a padded, red plaid carrier hanging by a green strap from his owner's shoulder. The owner didn't look bad herself in a fashionable tan trenchcoat, chic tan hat with a wide green hat band and a leather bag. This was not her day, however. Every dog has its day, the saying goes, and Saturday belonged to the dachshunds. Related sites:Note: Pages will open in a new browser window
