Rare silver dollar sold for $1.8 million
April 9, 1997 NEW YORK (CNN) -- An 1804 silver dollar, one of only 15 known to exist, was sold at auction Tuesday for a record $1.8 million. The buyer, Greg Roberts, 34, is the owner of Spectrum Numismatics of Santa Ana, California. A 10 percent auction fee was added to his winning bid of $1.65 million. The price topped the $1.4 million paid last year for a 1913 Liberty nickel -- one of only five known to exist. Both coins were part of a collection owned by Louis E. Eliasberg that has now been entirely auctioned off, fetching more than $20 million. Eliasberg, who died in 1976, was the co-founder of the Maryland National Bank and Finance Co. of America. He was renowned for his coin collection, which included one of every coin struck by the U.S. Mint from 1792 to 1976.
