Florida man offers to 'lease' a kidney
April 2, 1997 (CNN) -- Strapped for cash, a disabled man in Florida is seeking to lease one of his kidneys. Bob Loturco's newspaper advertisement in the Daytona Beach News-Journal offers to give up one of his healthy kidneys on a 99-year lease at a negotiable price. It's doubtful the proposal is legal, despite Loturco's contention that his driver's license allows him to donate his kidney if he dies, so he ought to be able to lease it. Florida Agency for Health Care Administration spokeswoman Lisa Jacques says it's against the law to buy, sell or lease a kidney or any other organ. "It's my darn kidney," Loturco said Wednesday. The former boat builder and car salesman has emphysema and cannot work. But he is not dying, and believes one kidney will suit him just fine.
