Former Navy analyst pleads innocent to espionage
March 31, 1997 ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (CNN) -- Robert Kim, a former U.S. Naval Intelligence analyst, has pleaded innocent to charges of espionage against the United States. Kim, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was indicted about two weeks ago on charges of passing documents to his native South Korea that relate to national defense. Of the seven documents Kim is accused of passing to a South Korean Agent, six were labeled secret and one was confidential. The case has put South Korea in the uncomfortable position of having to explain why it would spy on a close ally. Kim's trial is scheduled to begin on July 14, with pre-trial motions to be argued May 30. Kim remains in custody in an Alexandria, Virginia, jail. Related stories:
