MIAMI (CNN) -- The U.S. Coast Guard announced Monday a string of successful high-seas drug busts.
The arrests were made during Operation Frontier Shield, a joint effort between the U.S. and Haitian Coast Guards and Puerto Rican authorities. The agencies seized over six tons of cocaine and marijuana, and arrested eight suspected smugglers in the course of five days, the announcement said.
Operation Frontier Shield began October 1, 1996, and over 22,000 pounds of cocaine and 9,000 pounds of marijuana have been seized in and around Puerto Rico.
