NEW YORK (CNN) -- Life in the Big Apple can resemble a circus, so perhaps the site of elephants and zebras walking through the streets didn't faze its residents.
In the wee hours of Wednesday, elephants led zebras and horses on the 3-mile walk from Long Island City in Queens to Madison Square Gardens, where the circus opens Thursday.
The lead elephant, before entering the Queens Midtown tunnel, received a pass that eased the way through the toll booth.
Mayor Rudy Giuliani escorted the animals on their cross-town journey.
