Unlucky cold doesn't deter St. Patrick's Day parades
March 16, 1997 (CNN) -- You didn't need the luck of the Irish to appreciate the St. Patrick's Day festivities around the United States. (20 sec. / 800K QuickTime movie) But an extra layer of green would have been a good idea, at least in Chicago, where wind chill temperatures dipped below zero. As usual, workers dumped tons of green dye in the Chicago River to mark the holiday. Though St. Patrick's Day is actually Monday, people in cities across the country chose Sunday to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle in the fifth century.
Thermometers in Boston were in the 30s and about 250,000 were on hand as 35 floats, 25 bands, Clydesdales and bagpipers marched the 3.2 mile parade route. The weather was more temperate in Hermosa Beach, California, where thousands attended the beach town's third annual celebration. And on Virginia Beach, about 5,000 participants raced in a in the annual St. Patrick's Day marathon. The preferred attire: green shamrock shorts. Related stories:
