Chicago shows shamrock spirit
River dyed green to honor St. PatrickCHICAGO (CNN) -- The Chicago River may have run green Saturday, but St. Patrick's revelers in the Windy City were in danger of turning blue -- unless, of course, they bundled up in their parkas, be they green or any other color. The city began its wearin' o' the green on Saturday, two days ahead of the official March 17 holiday. And although temperatures didn't climb out of the 20s, thousands of Chicagoans gathered to watch the traditional parade and see their river turned green with tons of dye.
Chicago wasn't the only city getting a head start on the Irish holiday. A parade lasting more than four hours wound its way through Pittsburgh, while Hermosa Beach, California, hosted a smaller affair. In Virginia Beach, Virginia, 5,000 runners ran in the Shamrock Marathon, while the Brodie Mountain ski resort in Massachusetts featured green snow as part of its 10-day Irish Olympics celebration, in its 32nd year.
