Proposed ban on nude sunbathing killed
Legislators feared impact on European visitorsMarch 11, 1997Web posted at: 9:35 p.m. EST (0235 GMT) TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Visitors to Florida who like to take it all off to get a tan won a significant victory Tuesday. A bill in the Florida House that would have outlawed nude sunbathing at the state's 10 federal parks was defeated by a 6-3 committee vote. Though a similar bill is pending in the Senate, the committee vote means supporters of the ban will face an uphill fight to make it law. Though nudists' rights groups had fought the bill, the opposition of the tourism industry was pivotal in swaying lawmakers. There were fears that a ban would particularly hurt the state's European tourism market because those travelers are more accustomed to nude sunbathing than their U.S. counterparts.
